North End Montessori Hands-On Science
October 20, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
| $120Don’t miss out on this new opportunity at North End Montessori!
This eight week session, conducted on Friday mornings before lunch, will encourage students to seek out science in their everyday lives.
- 10/20/17-Brainz!: Students will create a paper brain hat, We will learn about the various areas of the brain, what those areas do and where to find them on our own heads. Your kids might come home walking like zombies for this one!
- 10/27/17-Bees: Using hexagonal recycled paper, chipboard and glue, we will recreate a honeybee’s home. Then using glitter, balloons and our hair, we will learn about static electricity and add glitter to our collages. Unchartered will protect the space from glitter spills, but parents should be prepared to receive children who might have glitter on them.
- 11/03/17-Constellations: Using paper lanterns, paint and little metal sticks we will either recreate a star chart globe or create our own constellations in a take-home night light. After the LED light burns out, either the batteries can be replaced, or the family can place a real bulb in the lantern and use it as a night light. Other parents have said this creation allowed them to turn off the hall light!
- 11/17/17-Slimy Smells: Working with Demeter Fragrance Library we will recreate the smells of some of our favorite foods in our slime. Not only will we discuss and create non-Newtonian fluids, but we will confuse our noses and brains with smells! Demeter Fragrance Library is assisting with assembling the right scents for this lesson.
- 12/01/17-Growing Crystals: Using warm water, pipe cleaners and borax cleaning solution, the students will create shapes and hang them in take-home cups to grow crystals. They will learn about solutions and saturation points. The crystals make fantastic sparkling winter decorations.
- 12/08/17-Gingerbread Anatomy: We are going to create cinnamon based gingerbread people and draw our organ systems on them. They can be used as air fresheners or winter decorations! These gingerbread men are not edible, but may make viewers laugh.
- 12/15/17-Geodes: Students will recreate crystal geodes using recycled materials and dyed Epsom salts. They will learn about pressure and rocks and how Geodes grow. These false Geodes sparkle well in winter decorations. We will also discuss recycling in this lesson.
- 12/22/17-Surface Tension Sand: The biggest complaint about sand is that it gets everywhere. What if you could add something to the sand and make it stick together? Using the power of surface tension, students will create a play sand that stays in the box you put it in and holds its shape!
